If you have access to another Mac (could always ask a buddy to help) with at least 10.6.8 installed you can follow these instructions for creating a USB jump drive to install Mavericks with.ģb. I feel this is the better money invested than even an 8gb RAM upgrade.Ģb. If you got the cash an SSD is definitely the way to go. However, there are a number of times I have purchased the cheapest one possible because I knew I was only going to use it for another year or so and didn't care if the battery lasted all that long.Ģa. I would also 2nd the option of getting a good battery.

A great app for checking the health of the current battery is Coconut Battery. EveryMac says that 8GB will technically work, it's just unsupported, like my 2011 MBP can unofficially run 16GB.ġ. The language is "any Mac that can run 10.6 can run 10.9", but I won't guarantee it for a 10.5 machine.ĮveryMac says that MBP 5,1 will support "current OS", so it's worth a shot, but you still have to get 10.6 on there.ģb.

Even if you do, you will likely not be able to get to Mavericks, as it only works on units that were manufactured to come with 10.6 or later. You can try if you know someone that has a Mac that came with 10.6 and has the install media, but it may not work. The problem is that you have to get yourself a retail copy of 10.6 (eBay) because the retail copies are universal and are not hardware bound like the install media that came with Macs up until 10.6. The Mac App store is only available in 10.6.8.

The only way to upgrade to 10.6 is with install media - you cannot get it digitally like versions after this. That means it only has install media for 10.5. Your issue is that the MBP came with 10.5. Just have install media to install from scratch.Ģb. How would you fit a larger battery into a body that has to seal shut?Ģa. If I do all of the above, I'm only in for ~$300 (though if the battery is actually OK and I leave the RAM alone, I'm only out the cost of the SSD, which I could also reuse for other projects). I don't have much experience with Macs, and thought this would be a good, (relatively) cheap way to get an introduction to the OS and some of the hardware. Might try to max it out at 8GB, which amazon has for ~$90.

If I do start from scratch, would I first install Snow Leopard, then dl Mavericks and install it?ģ. With the above scenarios, would I need to clone the SSD, then do the Snow Leopard install in-between (10.5.8->10.6.x->10.9)? I don't want any of her data carried over, so I'm hopefully starting from scratch with that new drive. Upgrade to Mavericks - currently running Leopard (10.5.8). Install SSD - I would like to put a 64GB in (though if I can find a 128GB for the right price, I'll upgrade). Replace the battery - are there larger aftermarket batteries available? Should I just stick with the OEM (which apple sells for ~$130)?Ģa. I'm planning to do the following, but need some advice.ġ. I think the only major issue is an iffy battery.
